Wednesday 13/Serpico

Manchester Academy 3

Nov 5th 2007

Review - John Consterdine

What a better way to spend Bonfire night then with the one time Murderdoll and Frankenstein Drag Queen Wednesday 13, playing a small venue in honour of his fans and there were plenty of Ghoul Scouts in evidence, in their uniform of black and red, waiting to see Mr. 13 once again. I must have missed something though when it came to opening act Serpico. They took a great drummer, Guns N Roses type riffs and then mixed them with the worst bits of bands like Aiden. The best cheer they got all night was for the song “Fuck Paris Hilton”, and to be honest that was a bit of a let down as well!

However as the lights dimmed and Wednesday 13 and co. hit the stage, you could tell something evil was about to happen, and it certainly did. Tearing straight into “197666” with the crowd singing every word right back at the band, followed by the fantastic “Die My Bride”. The ethos of this tour was meant to chart Wednesday 13’s career, from back in the days of the Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 to the Murderdolls and up to his current solo venture, and oh how they spoiled everyone. Playing several Drag Queens classics including “Rambo”, “Scary Song”, an excellent and mystical rendition of “The Rocketship Oddity 13”, “Oogie Boogie Baby Baby” and “I Was A Teenage Ghoul Scout” was a godsend and then to follow it all up there was a nice helping of Murderdolls. The song that probably brought Wednesday 13 into most peoples lives, “Dead In Hollywood” kicked things off followed by the very rarely played “Welcome To The Strange”, made even better because it was performed acoustically by Wednesday and bassist Nate,  as was “Love At First Fright”.

Finally the last part of the show focused on material from Wednesday’s most recent solo albums, “Transylvania 90210” and “Fang Bang”. Delivering the likes of  “Happily Ever Cadaver”, “Til Death Do Us Party”, “Rot For Me”, the anthem “I Want You…Dead” and “I Walked With A Zombie”, the titles say all that's needed really. Add in a roadie staggering about the stage dressed as a Zombie, biting the band members and you've the perfect Bonfire evening, mixed with a little of Halloween for good measure. Once again Wednesday 13 had out done himself and proved that ghouls can have fun! He’s promised to be back next year, so we’ll be waiting…
