Voodoo
Six
Newcastle Trillians
Sept
12th 2008 |
Events conspired against me the last
time Voodoo Six were in town, playing the same venue in support of Blaze
Bayley. It must be hearting for a band however to know that they
obviously did something right however if the packed crowd in Trillians
for their return was anything to go by.

Recent reviews on the site of the
band's album First Hit For Free, and it's associated singles, have
claimed that the band are "one of a number of new bands attempting to
recapture that sound and spirit we entitle ‘classic rock’ very few have
the talent and panache of Voodoo Six", and live it's hard to disagree
with those sentiments. With the swagger of Feed My Soul, Crawl, I Am The
Sun and especially Faith, sitting alongside a batch of new
material Voodoo Six are a band that know just how to pitch a
performance. Diminutive frontman Henry Rundell may be short in stature
and, hiding behind face paint that harks back to the progressive days of
Peter Gabriel era Genesis, may not command the stage physically but his
voice does it for him. Equal parts blues, soul and metal it adds a touch
of luminescence to the songs, and given the trio of guitarist alongside
him the physical side of the show isn't what is needed from Rollins.

Tony Newton, Matt Pearce and especially newish guy Chris Jones throw
every shape you could wish for laying down solid rhythms and blistering
solo's all tempered by occasional lush harmonies and backed up by the
pounding drums of Dave Cavill. Voodoo Six are a band that, at least
potentially, have all the right ingredients to make a noise on the UK
rock scene. Britain and Ireland has promised much over the past few
years with the like of Roadstar, The Answer, Winterville et all briefly
shining but given the right support and a fair wind this band could well
eclipse them all.
