When “The Cedar Falls”
released their debut EP “Our Angels Wait” they created quite
a stir here at HRH so when their latest offering entitled
the “Abandon” EP arrived it was a case of crossed fingers
and hope it was as good as the debut. Well if you liked the
band's debut you will positively fall head over heels and
down a flight of stairs for this one.
With a sound that is
fat, full, polished and with what could be called a “beef
cake” of a mix The Cedar Falls” have shown again that they
are very much a finished item. They know how to write catchy
contemporary rock and with the right backing the
possibilities for this band are endless. Title track
“Abandon” is kind of like Foo Fighters in urgency with a
touch of Creed like guitars whilst “Twilight” hooks you in
with some clean and gently distorted rhythm guitars and
gentle strummed guitar patterns. It’s power comes from the
knowledge of not knowing just when the band are going to
light the fuse and let it all blow. When they do kick into
full on mode its very impressive indeed. “Unity” is a
big song that flexes it’s muscles from start to finish. The
middle section shows the band have a knack for taking things
down and rebuilding them at just the right pace but if I had
just one wish it would be that Jay could maybe let rip with
just a little guitar solo somewhere, it wouldn’t need to be
anything flash just something that could add a little spice.
Finally “A Place Top Stand” is an acoustic effort that Kurt
Cobain would be proud of but, unlike the acoustic forays of
Nirvana that could be very dark and down, “A Place To Stand”
has a more optimistic and introspective quality.
All in all another quality effort
from a very impressive band.
