Lionsex

Review Dean Pedley

A raucous and raunchy three tracks from this Milton Keynes based five piece who have already managed to get themselves banned by Channel 4’s unsigned bands website for having an “inappropriate” name (I kid you not). Lionsex boast a frontman with the moniker Jef Leppard and influence wise there is a clear nod to the likes of GnR, Crue, The Stones, The Wildhearts and Hanoi Rocks to name just a few. With so many new UK acts coming along that simply want to appeal to the Download audience its refreshing to hear a band that have a great attitude, a great look and a real kick-ass vibe.

‘Rocket 2 U’r Heart’ kicks things off with a fast tempo and an immediate riff, and its already clear that this is no-nonsense, balls to the wall, rock n roll. The edgy and urgent ‘1 Nite’ veers off towards punk territory and is a bit rough around the edges, but they save the best until last with the mean and moody ‘Bringin’ Back The Heartache’ which packs a real punch. Taken at a mid-tempo the gritty vocal delivery is spot on and comes with a thumping bass that gives Davy Lyons a chance to impress alongside the twin guitar sound. Whilst their style may be retro, they are not merely copyists and ‘Bringin’ Back The Heartache’ shows a clear ability in both songwriting and execution.

From what I have heard so far Lionsex are definitely worthy of further investigation
