Dead Metal

Now then, now then, now then! This was like a Jim'll Fix It Moment as I was sitting having a quiet pint at Aberdeen's legendary Moorings bar checking out the local talent (bands not girls I hasten to add, well maybe the occasionally sly look) and after months of countless hardcore, screamcore, mathcore, penguincore. punk/pop and emo laced rock I was desperate to see some quality new real metal and ideally someone that would hit you between the eyes yet hadn't forgotten that some melody is required as well. Then Dead Metal happened and I raised my glass and saluted his holiness Jim for fixing it for me.

This band has potential in abundance, eighties thrash with a modern melodic metal overlay and getting the best of both worlds. There is the manic intensity of Evile/SSS there but also the musicality and melody of Maiden overlaid on top to create a sound that works very well indeed. They have only ever performed a handful of live shows and seemingly the one I caught was one of their worst but even if this was the case they still stomped all over the performances of many seasoned acts. Wayne Paterson has a great vocal punch for a thrash band but without losing the clean aggression of Master Of Puppets era Metallica. It is a much more controlled display of power than many of the current million miles an hour bands. From their currently available six track CD is their a stand out? I can honestly say no as they are all consistently excellent with a wide range of style and structure that will attract everyone from Slayer to Dream Theater fans and everyone in between.

Obviously production values are a bit on the ropey side just now but on a shoe string budget that is expected and there is room for improvement on the song structure side a bit though that really is nit picking. Live as well, experience will tighten them up and improve their stage charisma but the band are a real bunch of “characters” that within a year will be a formidable live act. If you are a fan of classic thrash and the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dragonforce, Helloween etc then I guarantee you will love this lot as well. Roll up labels here to sign one of Scotland's best challengers in the thrash renaissance.
