Meat Loaf To Quit?

Cutting short his gig tonight at Newcastle Metro Radio Arena, Meat Loaf announced to the packed audience that the show would be his last ever live performance.

From the outset of the show Meat Loaf was beset with vocal problems, getting through songs such as Life Is A Lemon, Out Of The Frying Pan, You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth and Dead Ringer For Love thanks to mixture of talking and shouting. The legendary voice was definitely not present and as much as his band tried to cover for their singer's deficiencies it was fairly obvious that he was going to struggle to make it through to the end of the evening.

Indeed as the video accompaniment to Paradise By The Dashboard Light lit up the monitors side stage Meat Loaf announced that this would, in all likelihood, be his last ever live performance. The vocalist tried twice to start the song but by then the  voice had totally given out. Throwing his dinner jacket to the floor he thanked the audience but admitted he could no longer continue and walked off stage whilst his band continued playing around him. Confusion reigned for the next few minutes until, eventually, an announcement through the PA confirmed that the gig indeed was over and that Meat Loaf had been taken ill.

Whether this was indeed Meat Loaf's last ever show remains to be seen, but the events in Newcastle tonight surely puts a question mark over the rest of the dates on the current UK tour, which has still to take in the following shows:

Nov 2nd - Birmingham NEC
Nov 4th - Manchester MEN
Nov 6th - London Wembley Arena
Nov 8th - Nottingham Arena
Nov 11th - Cardiff Arena

Frontiers Records Update

Frontiers Records have announced the signing of Ralf Scheepers for the production of his first solo album.

Best known for being the singer of German Power Metal legends PRIMAL FEAR, Ralf cut his teeth with TYRAN PACE first and GAMMA RAY later, the band that he put up together with former HELLOWEEN guitar player Kai Hansen.

World renowned for his amazing range and high-pitched singing voice, sometimes reminiscent of Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Scheepers finally decided to work on a solo album. "It is definitely going to be a Metal album, but I will surely explore some different sounds and ways to exploit my voice", says the German singer who is right now touring with PRIMAL FEAR throughout the world in support of their chartbreaker album NEW RELIGION. "I will call a few friends and guests, which will make this record a very special one, but all details will be revealed at a later stage".

The solo album will be recorded during the winter 2008 under the direction of Scheeper's bandmate in Primal Fear Mat Sinner with additional input by Scheepers himself, Achim Koehler and Charlie Bauerfeind. The label looks for a release during the summer of next year.

On a related note PRIMAL FEAR's latest opus "New Religion" entered the charts in Japan on Pos. 37 and on the overall Top 200 charts on Pos. 116. Congratulations to the band for this amazing new achievement.

House Of Lords

Recording sessions of the brand new HOUSE OF LORDS album "Come To My Kingdom" have been completed in Florida and mixing stages have started in the hands of Dennis Ward.

The new album is a natural progression from "World Upside Down" and was entirely written by the band along with the "5th Lord" Jeff Kent.

In the words of James Christian "We really had an amazing time with this new CD. I can't remember when things flowed so easily in terms of writing and recording. I think when people hear the new record they will be able to tell immediately that this is a band with direction and vision".

The songs were written from life experiences that cover a range of emotions. But one common thread flows throughout the record and that is finely crafted songs.

"Jimi Bell, BJ Zampa and Chris McCarvil and Jeff Kent have been an absolute joy to work with" continues Christian, "They are my brothers and they share the same passion to write and perform Classic Rocks songs that will stand the test of time".

"Come To My Kingdom" is classic House Of Lords with all the trademarks that captured the band so many fans in the early days. House of Lords will be on tour supporting the new CD in early 2008. Keep checking www.jameschristianmusic.com for upcoming tour dates.

Metal Blade Records has just inked a deal with Bay Area thrashers Hatchet! Hatchet is an onslaught of 5 thrash metal fanatics from the San Francisco Bay Area; a starting point for infamous thrash bands like Metallica, Exodus, Testament, and Vio-Lence just to name a few.

Formed by Julz on guitar and Slave behind the drum kit in January 2005, Hatchet was started as the two were fed up with the stale metal scene in their home town. Their desire to create music filled with substance and driving aggression would be enough to help revive a genre that had slowly began to fade away over the years in their hometown. Hatchet will be playing various one off dates until they release their new album in spring/summer 2008 and will then be on a heavy touring schedule. Head over to the band’s MySpace page to check out some tracks to get a taste of what’s to come!

"It is an honor to be working with Metal Blade", commented the band, "and to be a part of the legacy of amazing artists they have worked with over the years! Together we will help bring Thrash Metal back to the top where it belongs!"

In further Metal Blade news, the label have also announced the addition to its illustrious roster of Woe of Tyrants. From Chillicothe, Ohio comes the next heavy metal goliath. Woe of Tyrants is comprised of five guys dead-set on playing metal the way they want to, never listening or caring what scene they belong to or what sells the most records; who mix the best of death, thrash, and power metal in a concoction that defies pigeon-holing. Mix the vintage sounds of Testament and Metallica, brutal death metal, epic power metal, and even some southern fried flair thrown on top, and you have what has become known as Woe of Tyrants.

"We are extremely excited about working with Metal Blade and feel that we have a lot to offer the label and more importantly the heavy metal community all together. We feel Metal blade has our best interests at heart as they've shown their dedication to their artists and fans by releasing some of the best metal in the world for decades. We have always stuck with our guns when writing and performing our music, refusing to give into any of the trends or clichés that pop-up in the heavy music genre and are very thankful that Metal Blade has not let this go unnoticed. We are prepared to unleash the best and most crushing material we've written thus far and hope to reach as many people possible with our music. We are blessed to have such an opportunity. Keep a lookout for our debut, and lots of touring, this is only the beginning!" Woe of Tyrants

“Woe of Tyrants plays a unique blend of death, thrash, melody, exceptional guitar riffs and even a little bit of Southern rock. They have a great work ethic and we can't wait to work along side them to take them to the next level. W.O.T. will definitely be a band to keep all eyes and ears on. Welcome to the Metal Blade family, guys!” Metal Blade Records – Jen Graham

Woe of Tyrants will be touring through the winter and will be finishing up the writing of their Metal Blade debut in the spring with plans to enter the studio in early summer 2008. More details on tour dates and the album will be made over the coming weeks and months so be sure to keep an eye on the band’s website and MetalBlade.com.

What only can be described as a 'super session' is taking place on virtuosic Florida guitarist Todd Grubbs upcoming fourth solo album titled Time, Space and the Electric. For these sessions, Grubbs, who has been prominently featured in national and international publications such as Guitar World, Guitar FPM and Guitar (Japan), has enlisted an array of well-known musical artists to record on his new CD. “I am very excited about how the CD is coming out!”, says Grubbs . “It's even better than I hoped. I feel like I have achieved a nice balance between chops and composition. The CD is to me the culmination of all my years in music to this point – I have worked really hard to make the best album I can with no concessions towards trends, genres or anything else." The album will feature contributions from the following all star cast:

Derek Sherinian from prog-rock giants Dream Theater and Planet X appears on three tracks. “He is truly a world class musician and a total pro,” compliments Grubbs. “He has a fantastic sense of melody and the technical ability to play anything. Derek is also an extremely cool guy who's very easy to work with and completely down to earth.”

Also legendary Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention keyboardist Don Preston has lent a hand. Preston, who is best known for his work with Zappa, Carla Bley, The Residents, Grande Mothers, and John Carter, as well as a his own solo work, will be recording his signature keyboards on a track. “Don Preston's contribution is amazing!,” Grubbs exclaims. “He is playing better than ever as well as being a legend – I feel like I have a Beatle on my disc!”

Also featured on the new Todd Grubbs CD is Chris Poland of rock legends Megadeath and OHM. “Getting Chris to do a guitar solo was a big deal for me as he is one of my absolute favorite current players”, says Grubbs.

Other musicians that appear: “John Wesley (Porcupine Tree) and Ralph Santolla (Obituary) are good friends of mine as well as being incredible players,” says Todd, “and they both made contributions to this project.”; Mark Prator of Iced Earth/John Wesley and Sean Malone of Gordian Knot also contribute drums and bass respectively to several tracks. “Sean is one of the best bass players around with an innate musical sense and chops for days, “raves Grubbs. “Mark plays some great drums on a number of tracks and is also mixing the CD. Mark is a musical giant!”; Also, Patrick Bettison of Acoustic Alchemy, who Grubbs describes as a brilliant musician with a great sound and feel, plays bass on a few songs.

Last but not least, Jeff Henry (Drums) and Alan Tatum (Bass), current Todd Grubbs Group members both made large contributions to the new CD and will be the backbone of the live shows in 2008.

Todd Grubbs studied at Berklee College of Music and has been voted ‘Most Outstanding Guitarist’ at the Tampa Bay Music Awards, as well as winning the ‘Most Outstanding Video’ two consecutive years in a row. Along with Frank Zappa, Grubbs influences, which can be heard throughout Time, Space and the Electric, range from Steve Vai, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Ulli Jon Roth and Adrian Belew. “The songs are going to be very thematic,” Todd describes his new work, “with equal emphasis on composition and chops, stylistically ranging from heavy to ethereal.”

The release date for Time, Space and the Electric is tentatively scheduled for January 1, 2008 – a date we can all look forward to! “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in the past. My desire has always been to write and perform music and I am very blessed to be able to continue doing this.”

The monumental work will now not be released on November 5th (Europe) as previously announced. "Precambrian" will finally see the light of day on November 12th.

Journalist Neil Daniels, the man behind the recent Judas Priest book, Defenders Of The Faith, has a new website online which can be found @ www.neildaniels.com

Following the recent expanded, 2-CD release of their debut album, Huddersfield metallers NEX are releasing a new single and playing a handful of dates before returning to the studio to record their next album...

Prior to signing their record deal with Rising Records, Nex took their metal extravaganza on the road, honing their craft by playing every venue they could and gaining new fans across the UK. Their first demo lead the path to support slots with No Comply, Amplifier, Winnebago Deal and Skindred and airplay on Radio 1. It also gained the title of ‘Demo of the Week’ on Kerrang! Radio and won them the ‘National Kerrang! K-Fest’ competition. This then landed them a spot opening up at Danko Jones’ Manchester Academy gig…and they’ve gone from strength to strength ever since!

The following live shows have currently been confirmed:

Oct 31st - Huddersfield The Parish
Nov 2nd - High Wycombe Irish Club
Nov 4th - London Camden Underworld *
Nov 10th - Barnsley Metrodome
Nov 15th - Kettering Sawyer’s *
Nov 16th - Peterborough Park *
Nov 18th - Liverpool RoadKill *
Nov 21st - Stoke Glebe *
Nov 22nd - Stoke Black Valve *
Nov 23rd - Bridgewater Rugby Club *
Nov 24th - Swansea Sin City *
Dec 1st - Falmouth Princess Pavilion *
Dec 10th - Huddersfield Bar 1:22 *
Dec 11th - Barnsley The Arches *

* Dates on the Rising Records Tour

Joining Nex for the Rising records Tour will  be Cornish teen outfit NATO who, having recently signed to Rising Records, released their debut single in July, and their debut album, Kill The Fox To Foil The Plan, on August 20th.

The band have only been gigging for six months, but have already found themselves sharing the stage with the likes of Enter Shikari, Johnny Truant, Bring Me The Horizon, Raging Speedhorn and Hell Is For Heroes, and will be co-headlining Rip Curl Boardmasters with Enter Shikari, in Newquay…the UK’s biggest surf’n’skate festival!

In addition to the Rising Records Tour Nato also play the following dates in the coming weeks:

Nov 2nd - Lowestoft Sea Breeze
Nov 12th - Manchester Music Box
Dec 1st - Falmouth Princess Pavilion
Dec 15th - Norwich B2
Dec 20th - Cheltenham 2 Pigs
Dec 21st - Carmarthen The Jolly Tar
Dec 22nd - Plymouth White Rabbit

Fables Last Stand, who come kicking and screaming out of Newcastle and who released their debut single in August will release a second single in the new year – but before they cross the Atlantic to record their debut album, they’re playing a UK tour, so come join the party…

Nov 2nd - Ashton-Under-Lyne Witchwood
Nov 5th - Norwich Queen Charlotte
Nov 9th - Clacton The Pier
Nov 16th - Sheffield Casbah
Nov 17th - Leeds Rio’s
Dec 7th - Redcar Silks

Fables Last Stand draw their inspiration from the likes of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and The Cult rather than their glammy brethren on Sunset Strip - vocalist Roachie and sidekick Twiggy are powerful frontmen, and with Rickenbastard (bass) Black John (rhythm guitar) and G-Lover (drums) complete the line-up for this sensational new band.

Fortune Favours, based in Cardiff, are a brand new band…but their first demo has been raising eyebrows. Already championed by Huw Stephens on Radio 1, the band have also had features in Metal Hammer and The Big Issue…not bad for an act yet to release a single or album. The demo’s two tracks, Never Ever Sever and Tonight We’re Breaking Records, show a song writing ability far beyond expectations, with a powerful and sharp rock dynamic that recalls acts as diverse as The Mars Volta, Therapy?, Coheed and Cambria and Wales' own Lostprophets.

Lead singer Pistol Pete says, "We're not a sceney band, mainly because we don't know half the scenes people bang on about. ‘Screamo’? ‘Post hardcore’? We have no idea, mainly because we don't care. We're just a rock n' roll band…

"When was the last time you read an interview with a band and they didn't bitch about touring, what a tough time they had in school or how their bandmates don't understand them?" asks Pete. "We're going to tour like Black Flag and party like Motley Crue. A bit like the Rolling Stones or Guns n’ Roses, only we're going to have way bigger egos and sell way more records…!"

Fortune favours currently have the following live shows lined up:

Nov 1st - London Nambuca,
Nov 2nd - Ystrad Mynach Whammy Bar
Nov 8th - Cardiff Clwb Ifor Bach
Nov 27th - Cardiff Barfly (with Zico Chain)
Dec 1st - Ystrad Mynach Whammy Bar

Despite being away from the live scene for over 20 years, and not having recorded any new material since 1994’s cover of former singer Geoff Mann’s ‘Piccadilly Square’, the band’s loyal following has remained.

All of their original albums have been re-mastered and re-released in the last 10 years (with bonus tracks etc.) on Cyclops Records. In addition the band has embarked on a series of ‘Archive Releases’ of their own – with seven titles released to date.

In 2005 Virgin Records finally released ‘Twelfth Night’ (or ‘XII’ as it is now known) on CD - and in the same year the ‘Creepshow’ video – the only previously available filmed footage on the band – was released on DVD by Voiceprint – as part of their ‘Live from London’ series.

Escape Music Announce Lynn Allen Release

All hail the King of Iowa.. Billy Peiffer, you thought this area of the U S of A was only associated with corn and farming....wrong!. Billy Peiffer; songwriter extraordinaire has been rockin' and sockin' the tri state area since 1980...now finally this prolific songwriter gains his first UK release through renowned cutting edge outlet Escape Music Ltd.

Early eighties Bill formed Pilot with Jesse Johnson who went on to form The Time And have a successful solo career.. leading the way for Lynn Allen.. originally monickered Art Young.. this was in 1982, taking to 1983 to record and change their monicker to Lynn Allen the infamous EP was released with the regional hit" Leave Me alone"

1984 saw the bands first LP "We Laugh at You", the biggest seller in the quad cities except Michael Jackson's "Thriller", spawning the classic line up of Bill Pieffer (Vocals/guitar), Dale Fisher (keyboards), Bobby boyd (drums), Terry Murphy(bass) and Tim Compton (guitars). With a European promo tour, Kerrang and Metal Forces reviews and US support slots with Ratt, Great white and Warrant, and another regional hit "Last Nite", things were on the up

Later that year, journalists were invited to Daveport Iowa, to taste the Lynn Allen experience as the boys prepare to record ,their 3rd opus , autobiographical "Look at Me I'm the King" Bill was doing better than signed bands on the East and West Coast without selling his soul to the corporate records companies, band members then came and went, causing a hiatus for the third release. Bill moved to San Francisco to hook up with members of Nightranger and Journey in a group called Big Rock, unfortunately his peers didn't seem to be as serious as he was , Bill returned to Iowa and released The aforementioned "LAMITK", under new title Panorama Park with different songs and members, spawning the aor classic "In Time"

1991, Bill hooks up with long time partner in crime Johnny Hal Williamson on bass, family related Terry Murphy on guitars and "Panorama Park" drummer Tommy Guild to form Dead End Kids, before reverting back to Lynn Allen name and begin recording the s/t pink cd.

1992, Pink album released with European journalists attending record release party, spawning "Poisoning Of The Rain", "Jesse" and "Surprise Surprise", highlighting Bills progression as a songwriter and his ability to wear shorts on top of his trousers.

1994 sees the release of the tribute to the greatest rock n' roll club ever: "Live At Beethoven's" from tapes recorded at the aforementioned venue in 1986 found in Hawaii. Local fans vote Lynn Allen Top group in first Oil Music awards

1995-Due to over the top demand for We laugh at You , commanding silly prices on LP worldwide, Bill hooks up with legendary guru Khalil Turk then working for Long Island, to secure the bands first German release , a re-issue of the afore mentioned opus with a bonus track and some teeth on the cover

1997- "Petrified Ice Cream" is released on Swedens Rock On The Rise Label, spawning "I Am", "Where are You Now" and "Gone to pieces", Bill takes post grunge apocalyptic AOR to another level.

1999- "Best of Lynn Allen" is released with bonus track "Romeo" bringing Bill grandly into the 21st century

Most of this decade Bill develops his Iowa project, only Bill could take the name of the state and wear the crown proudly

Mixing the two projects in 2007 , Lynn Allen returns for the most exciting part of their career and teaming up with long time devotee and good friend Khalil Turk's & Barrie Kirtley's notoriously cutting edge label Escape Music, a marriage is made in heaven!

"The Horse You Rode In on" is set for a December release and the fruit of that marriage, Bills finally got the sound right, this is no mere "AOR by numbers" release, but the culmination of years of songwriting and gigging in the Midwest to bring Lynn Allen To the best position they have ever been in, with tentative UK dates next year to match the bands UK debut on CD...

Quick Updates

The Sam Isaac show frequently resembles an indie cottage industry. Friends make artwork, do recording, direct music videos and carry clipboards. Perfect strangers sell his CDs. Sam's part of the bargain is donning an acoustic guitar, a Casio keyboard or occasionally just his own voice and making the music that is at the centre of all of this.

Counting Bright Eyes, The Spinto Band and Ed Harcourt amongst his influences, twenty-year-old Sam grew up in the sleepy town of Malvern in the West Midlands before moving to East London in 2005. Having self-released two mini albums, both of which received glowing reviews and national radio play, April saw Sam Isaac releasing a split 10" with Luke Leighfield on Mannequin Republic - the new label of Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly's Sam Duckworth. He has recently recorded sessions on Janice Long's Radio 2 show, Huw Stephens' Radio 1 show and John Kennedy's Xfm show and has been played by Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq on Radio 1. Sam has spent the summer touring UK festivals, including Wireless, Glastonbury, Truck and Latitude.

A busy end of year is looming for Sam with shows supporting the likes of Scouting For Girls and Pigeon Detectives (to be broadcasted on MTV2), playing Huw Stephens Sŵn festival in Cardiff as well as a slot at the prestigious BBC Electric Proms (w/ Edwyn Collins), as one of just four new artists on the lineup, and the In The City event in Manchester.

Sam Isaac’s debut single, 'Sideways' will be co-released on 10th December by Big Scary Monsters Records and Alcopop! Records, as part of BSM’s “Meet and Greet” singles series. All copies of the release will come with a password offering access to a secret website containing exclusive recordings, videos and other Sam Isaac goodies.

Issac play the following shows across the UK in October & November

27.10 – Watford, Oxfam Furniture Store (Oxjam)

Although their time has been short so far, The New 1920 already have plenty to boast about. Having spent years earning their stripes in much loved UK bands Douglas and thisGIRL, they quickly took the Cardiff scene by storm and weren’t content to stop there.

In their own words, The New 1920 "mix equal parts indie and rock together with rhythmic vocal melodies and hook filled choruses, delivering songs that are sharp bursts of kinetic energy designed to dance to." And that's exactly what thousands of kids were doing in early 2007 when the band were invited to open for The Lostprophets on their European tour, selling a limited pressing of 1000 CDs in just 12 dates along the way. It's no coincidence the same thing happened when the dancefloors were shaking at their shows with the likes of The Blackout, Dartz!, Kids In Glass Houses and at a multitude of summer festivals this year.

It's not just on the live front where they've enjoyed success. Their music has already graced the airwaves of BBC Radio One, XFM and were even awarded the 'band of the week' accolade by New York's Channel 1301 station. With their debut single set to land in November, supported by tours through to the end of the year, you can be sure this won’t be the last you’ll hear of this fast-rising foursome.

The New 1920's debut single, 'Torpedo Libido' will be co-released on 12th November by Big Scary Monsters Records and (Sam Duckworth, AKA Get Cape Wear Cape Fly’s) Mannequin Republic Records, as part of BSM’s “Meet and Greet” singles series.

Bristol quintet Undercut return to release their hotly anticipated single Hot In That on 10th December 2007 through Distiller Records. A sleazy, thrusting romp of a track, Hot In That was a live favourite when on tour with The Crimea back in the summer and further underlines the band’s ability to write highly infectious indie anthems.

For the video to the single, the band have once again teamed up with the incredible video director El Skid from Chrome Productions who earned a CAD nomination for the ‘Banksy’ inspired video to previous single ‘A Bit OF Education’. In Hot In That, the band perform from a collection of famous punk album covers, while a Paris Hilton scrubalike loses the plot.

You can check it out here: http://www.chromeproductions.co.uk/media/promos/undercut_hot_in_that.mov. The video features dancers from E4’s program School of Performing Arts, and the making of this video features on the E4 series throughout October and November. A Bit Of Education is also the title music to the series.

‘Hot In That’ will be available on 7" vinyl with the Manhatten Clique Remix on the flipside and digitally with 2 more remixes from Dogtown Clash and Dub Pistols.  In support of the release, Undercut head out on tour with the Swiss adventurers, pioneers and mad scientists The Young Gods.
