Towersound - Towersound

Rating - 7/10

Review - Steve Atkinson

Debut release from a very young group of French guys, the age range of this talented trio is 17 to 26. Based around two brothers, Jean-Christophe (Vocals) and Laurent (Guitar) and completed by drummer Flo. What is immediately evident is the musical talent on display, all three being more than competent musicians. They’ve a definite grasp on the art of song writing and have written an album of original tunes, creating for themselves, a niche in which to ply their trade. For any new bands just getting into recording their efforts and trying to present them to the listening public, take note. These guys have got their marketing just right, a well-presented press pack with bio information and decent CD cover artwork. Of all the demo’s/debuts I receive every month, this instantly stood out. And it makes a difference.

I suspect that this might be a self-financed release with some help from French metal label Brennus Music. But that aside, they’ve made a decent stab at presenting their music. The opening instrumental “Prelude” defines the band as musicians, an interesting, mediaeval acoustic piece that instantly grabs the attention and segue’s beautifully into “Towersound” the title track. Intrinsically guitar based, the songs use a smattering of keyboard to add depth to the sound. Which in truth is a valiant attempt, but still leaves a few of the tracks sounding a little empty. The production quality sounds a little like a very good demo, a little harsh in places and lacking the ultimate polish of a big studio. As a listener I can envisage this band as a five-piece with another guitar and a dedicated keyboard player, the songs are strong enough and equally well constructed. They just lack depth. Nit-picking in the extreme I know but I feel it has to be said.

All the ingredients are there however, vocally strong, the Anglo-French accent takes a bit of getting used to, but having spent years listening to Trust’s Repression album I’m almost a native. Guitar wise it’s impressive too, plenty of texture and no little talent. A good first attempt from a band with a future and judging by the production frailties it gives a good account of what the band sound like live. I’ll be keen to follow Towersound, to see how their careers develop.
