To Catch
A Thief are a young Scottish band who are
probably best described as emo-core or whatever
the sub-genres of pop-punk bands are these days.
This cheerfully titled EP is their second and
shows a band who are tight and together with
great playing and a nice line in vocal
harmonies. Unfortunately they lack much in the
way of originality. The songs aren’t
particularly memorable and they sound just like
every other emo type band clogging up the
airwaves these days.
The best
track of the five here is the jolly “We Are The
Cancer” which has a nice hook and a good chorus
but it could be just any band playing it from
any country. If you come from
Scotland
why sound like you come from the American
mid-west? They do like their dark subject matter
but is that enough to stand out from the rest? I
think not. There is
definite promise here but either the emo kids of
the world have an insatiable appetite for any
band who can play this stuff or they’ll have to
have a rethink of what they’re really about down
the road.
