I’ve really got to watch what I say in my reviews. Why? Record companies/artist complaints? No. Take a look at this quote from my Jeff Scott Soto review at Trillians from a year or so ago.“the opening track to Journey’s Frontiers album, 'Separate Ways' My jaw hit the floor I ‘v seen this track performed many times by many different bands, but this version was the heaviest and rockiest ever, with JSS showing that he could sing for Journey as easily as Steve Augeri does now!” Look what happen there! And more to the point take a look at this quote from my review of the last TNT studio album 'All The Way To The Sun.' “Night Ranger only got half way to the sun whereas TNT have gotten all the way, lets hope they don’t burn up!” History now shows that that particular line up has indeed burnt up with vocalist Tony Harnell having left the band to be replaced with Tony Mills of Shy fame. So what we have here my friends is a live DVD and CD Of Harnell's second to last concert with the band recorded in Madrid on the 1st April 2006. With a great collection of tracks taken mainly from the last few albums, with a few classics thrown in for good measure, the band put on a stunning show. From the title song of the 'New Religion' album to 'She Needs Me' and on through the excellent 'Black Butterfly from the latest record everything is in place and TNT simply cannot be faulted musically. However confession time. The first time I 'heard' the DVD I had stuck it on the player whilst doing some chores and caught glimpse of the video only occasionally as I passed by the television. Initially I thought it was fine, but when I sat down and watch it I discovered a problem with this DVD. Not with performance or the band, just way it has been shot. The quick fire editing sees the cameras angles change rapidly, switching between band members seemingly at random. Now okay this may stop the DVD from becoming boring, however the camera crew uses one of those cameras mounted on a crane and this is used frequently to “fly” in and out over the audience. I’ve got to be honest this left me feeling somewhat seasick after a while. In fact it reminded me at times of some dodgy old Top Of The Pops footage from way back when. Basically this means that as much as I like the actual performance I’ll not be watching it all that often in the future. Listening to it yes, as it is a great show, but watching is a definite no no. The extras are limited to a waste of space footage of a signing session and two other live tracks. There is another version of 'She Needs Me' as well as a version of 'Everyone’s A Star' recorded at Sweden Rock back in 2004. Whilst this footage is not as polished as that shot in Madrid, it doesn't make me the viewer feel half as queasy.. What would have been nice though would have been an interview or two with the band delving into the history and memories of this line up of TNT. Especially given that Harnell has now left the band it would have been a nice way to round out an era. All in all a strange one this. 9/10 for the musical performance but the video aspect only scores a measly 5/10 thus giving 7/10. Possibly one for hardcore fans only then... |
