Building on musically challenging debut "Everything's
Watched, Everyone's Watching" released in 2006 comes
"Turtle Nipple & The Toxic Shock"
and
for anyone who wondered whether the San Jose quartet
could maintain their edge, well you needn't have worried, no
conventional song structures were harmed in the
making of this record!
What this means in real terms though is another
fifteen
tracks of impossible to classify music even though,
just occasionally, the band do stray into more traditional territory
as with "Trot Line Beer Can" & "R4tb3lly"
which are
fairly straight up hardcore and their cover of Black
Flags "Wasted" is pleasingly true to the original.
Butsuch ventures into the norm are rare instead the
norm as far as Heavy Heavy Low Low are concerned is to clash styles
and time signatures against each other, often in a
discordant way.
No-one can deny that there's a wealth of ideas and
invention at work throughout "Turtle Nipple & The
Toxic Shock" but it will only reward the most
dedicated and open minded listener. To get the trance space-rock majesty of "Eagle Mewndria"
for example, requires a degree of aural stamina that
not many people possess and this is where the
band might face a dilemma in the future. For now
though anyone looking for challenging listen will
definitely find it here.
