And so after twenty years and a dozen
albums probably Canada's finest AOR exponents bow out with
Hope, giving Harry Hess and Pete Lesperance the
opportunity to move on and follow a different path.
As with all things Harem Scarem-related Hope will be
compared with what has gone before, and in particular with
what is considered to be their definitive statement, Mood
Swings. But by and large Hope is a dark and
brooding record, with little to lighten the mood along the
way and, in making this their swansong, they have left us on
a something of a downbeat note.
Opening with contemporary rocker 'Watch
Your Back', the riffs are immediately aggressive and harsh,
with the harmonies and melody taking something of a back
seat. 'Time Bomb' and the title track continue in a similar
vein before 'Days are Numbered' finds the band in more
familiar territory, with a catchy use of phrasing in the
chorus and Lesperance's guitar at the very heart of the
song. Both 'Dark Times' and 'Beyond Repair' have anger
running through them with Hess’ biting vocal well at the
forefront. In fact, it is not until song number eight,
'Shooting Star' that they deliver the huge power ballad that
they have become known for with a soaring chorus and
trademark melody. This is the signal for the album to close
strongly with the thunderous 'Calm Before The Storm' and the
emotive and precious ballad 'Nothing Without You'. An
acoustic version of 'Higher' is tacked on as a bonus track
to European versions of the album and is a sublime example
of just how good a band Harem Scarem really were.
Overall, Hope is an album that
never manages to hit the heights achieved by 2006's Human
Nature and it would be interesting to know just how much
was newly written and conceived as opposed to being left
over from previous sessions. But Harem Scarem leave the
legacy of a body of work that can be compared with the very
best the AOR scene has had to offer over the past two
decades.
They will be missed.
