Originally
formed back in the late 1980's it wasn't until 200 that Dark
sky first released an album in the shape of Believe
which was quickly
followed by 2002's
Edge Of Time and then 2005's
Living & Dying so Empty Faces is therefore the bands fourth
release. Taking equal parts Bonfire, Jaded Heart and the
Scorpions, with just a little bit of Helloween in the guitar
department Dark Sky are firmly rooted in the European metal
scene. Indeed vocalist Frank Breuninger bears more than a
passing resemblance to Bonfire’s Claus Lessmann and that
should indicate that the band are more than competent
musically speaking.
But, and you probably saw this coming,
musical proficiency is nothing without the songs to back it
up and here the song writing leaves much to be desired. The
songs on the whole are completely unoriginal and even worse
unmemorable, in fact the best track on the album is a cover
of Maniac from the Flashdance soundtrack and even that was
done better recently by Firewind. The original material just
doesn't make any sort of impact, what hooks there are don't
work and certainly don't stick in the brain or engender a
need to sing-a-long and that, in a melodic rock album is
probably the death knell. On the upside it's well produced
and sounds sonically fine and basically it's not a terrible
album by any means, it's just all been done before and done
so much better.
